IDENTIFYING PROVIDER PRACTICE PATTERNS AND KNOWLEDGE GAPS
THE NATIONAL OBSTETRICIAN-GYNECOLOGIST SURVEY PANEL
Over 200 current fellows in the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists participate in the PRCRN Physician Survey Panel. Participants have agreed to complete surveys multiple times per year on their practice patterns, knowledge, and attitudes as they relate to maternal and child healthcare and evidence-based guidelines.
THE WWAMI REGION WOMEN’S HEALTHCARE PROVIDER PANEL
Since moving to the University of Washington in 2018, the PRCRN has expanded its focus into the WWAMI area (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho). We are still actively recruiting WWAMI-area healthcare providers who care for women and children. Any physician, advanced practice clinician, midwife, nurse, or family medicine physician practicing in the WWAMI region are welcome to participate. Participating healthcare providers will be asked to complete surveys about their practice patterns, knowledge, and attitudes as they relate to maternal and child healthcare and evidence-based medicine.
If you are a physician, advance practice clinician, or nurse midwife that cares for women, we want to hear from you!
PILOTING EVIDENCE-BASED INTERVENTIONS TO IMPROVE WOMEN’S HEALTHCARE
Collaborators at sites across the United States participate in practice-based maternal-child health studies using a three-fold approach. Each participating site collects 1) patient survey data; 2) medical provider survey data; and 3) medical record data regarding a specific topic. Select sites conduct intervention research in office settings.
Since 1997 over 140 sites have provided comprehensive patient data on topics including: depression, anxiety, obesity, hormone therapy, fetal alcohol syndrome, spina bifida, post term pregnancy, food borne diseases (such as Listeriosis and Toxoplasma gondii), cystic fibrosis, thyroid disorder, cesarean delivery, multiple pregnancy, gestational weight gain, intimate partner violence, diabetes, hepatitis C virus, HIV, interactions with the pharmaceutical industry, and professional practice topics (such as liability, workload, continuing professional development, duty hours).

USING ELECTRONIC HEALTH RECORDS TO UNDERSTAND PATIENT OUTCOMES
The PRCRN has access to robust electronic health record data sources through the Institute of Translational Health Sciences at The University of Washington, and through PRCRN site collaborators. PRCRN investigators have used EHR data to review trends in care provision and patient outcomes as they relate to changing evidence-based guidelines over time.
ehr data highlight: evaluating gestational weight gain trends after iom recommendations were released
In 2018 Dr. Michael Power (PRCRN Collaborator) partnered with PRCRN Site Geisinger Health Systems to examine any changes in gestational weight gain among rural pregnant women within their health system. Specifically, Dr. Power looked at whether the release of the IOM 2009 recommendations on appropriate ranges for gestational weight gain had any impact on patient outcomes. Dr. Power found that nearly ten years after the recommendations were released, there was no significant change in women under or over the recommended weight range.
